FAQ

Location Flexibility

Q: Why do locations change from month to month?
We partner with bookshops, galleries, independent cinemas, and pop‑up spaces. Rotating venues keeps the experience fresh, supports local hosts, and allows us to reach different neighbourhoods and cities. It’s a touring model by design – not a limitation.

Q: Will there always be an event in my city?
We are building a touring network. Currently, it will be 1-2 cities per month across the UK and China. Subscribe to our newsletter to know when we are in your city.

Q: What if I book a ticket and the venue changes after I buy it?
Locations are confirmed at least four weeks before the event. We never change a venue after tickets go on sale. If an unforeseen issue forces a change (extremely rare), we will notify you immediately and offer a full refund or transfer.

Q: Are events in different cities happening on the same weekend?
Yes. The same monthly question is discussed simultaneously in all participating cities. You can attend in London, Shanghai, or a pop‑up city – the core conversation is the same, but local venues and facilitators bring their own flavour.

General Questions

Q: What is In The Margins?
Live, facilitated events where strangers move from awkward silence to real dialogue. We offer three tracks: Politics, Pop‑Culture, and Cinema. Each month, a single question is discussed across all three tracks, each through its own lens.

Q: Do I have to attend all three days (Friday–Sunday)?
No. Each session is ticketed separately. You can attend one session, stay for the whole day, or come on different days. The schedule repeats daily.

Q: How long is each session?
Politics and Pop‑Culture: 2 hours. Cinema: 3-4 hours (includes a film and or extract plus discussion).

Q: Can I switch tracks on the same day?
Yes. Buy tickets for different tracks and time slots. You might attend Politics at 9am, Pop‑Culture at 1pm, and Cinema at 4pm – all on the same day.

Q: Do I need to prepare anything before attending?
No preparation is required. For the Cinema track, the film or extract is screened during the session. For Politics and Pop‑Culture, just bring your curiosity. The Marginal Lines Deck guides the conversation.

Q: What is the Marginal Lines Deck?
A proprietary card deck we use as an icebreaker and conversation guide. Each card poses a question or prompt that can be related to our annual theme. You’ll use it during the event, and you can buy a deck to take home.

Q: Is there a membership or subscription?
Not yet but soon.

A monthly postcard subscription (snail mail). Each month, you receive a physical postcard that summarises everything that happened at In The Margins events around the world.

The postcard includes:

  • The month’s question and topic in detail.

  • A rundown of opinions that were agreed upon across different tracks.

  • A rundown of opinions that were disagreed upon or left unresolved.

  • Notable quotes, film references, or debate highlights.

You can choose to receive summaries from:

  • 🇬🇧 UK events (London + other UK cities)

  • 🇨🇳 China events (Shanghai + other Chinese cities)

  • 🌍 Pop‑up events (Berlin, Seoul, Tokyo, Jakarta, etc.)

  • Or a global edition that blends highlights from all locations.

This subscription is designed for people who cannot attend physically but still want to follow the conversation. The postcard arrives in your mailbox – no email, no app. Just paper, ink, and ideas.

Price: TBC (estimated £5–£8 per month including international postage)

Safety & Conduct

Q: Is there a safe‑space policy?
Yes. Harassment, discrimination, and intimidation are not tolerated. We challenge ideas, not people. Read our full Safe‑Space Policy.

Q: What if I feel uncomfortable during an event?
Approach any facilitator (they wear a branded lanyard). They are trained to listen and help – whether that means moving you to another group, taking a break, or addressing inappropriate behaviour.

Q: Can I take photos or record the event?
Please ask for consent before photographing or recording other attendees. We occasionally take photos for promotional use – you will be informed at check‑in and can opt out.

Tickets & Refunds

Q: How do I buy tickets?
Through our Events page. Tickets are available per session. You can also buy a “day pass” for multiple sessions at a discount.

Q: What is your refund policy?
Full refunds up to 3 to 7 days before the event. No refunds for no‑shows.

Q: Do you offer discounted tickets for students or low‑income attendees?
Yes. Email us at hello@in-themargins.com with proof of status (student ID, low‑income concession). Limited slots per event.

Technical & Access

Q: Are events accessible for people with disabilities?
We try to choose venues that are wheelchair accessible. If you have specific access needs, contact us at least two weeks before the event.

Q: Are the events in English or Chinese?
The UK: English. China: Mandarin, sometimes with facilitators fluent in both. Other cities: as announced.

Q: Can I attend online?
Currently, events are in‑person only. We may add hybrid options in the future but that’s not anytime soon.
