“When is a belief inherited, and when is it earned?”
We absorb our first beliefs long before we can question them – from family, school, and culture. But at some point, we must decide which beliefs we actually own and which we merely borrowed. This month, we examine the line between inheritance and choice. Can a belief be “earned” without a crisis? Is an inherited belief automatically weaker? Using Arrival (2016) as a lens, we’ll ask whether language itself forces us to inherit worldviews – and whether learning a new language can earn us a new mind.
Like a Deer in Headlights: Confrontation
Age Group: 18+
When a belief is suddenly challenged – by new evidence, a hostile question, or a personal crisis – we often freeze. This month, we explore that moment of paralysis. Why do we shut down instead of adapt? What makes some confrontations productive and others traumatic? Through 12 Angry Men (1957), we’ll watch how one dissenting voice disrupts a room of certainty.
Well‑Meaning Aggression

“When is a belief inherited, and when is it earned?”
This month, we examine the ethics of forceful persuasion – from political interventions to personal “tough love.” When does good intention justify aggressive tactics? Is there ever a right way to force someone to change their belief? For the Cinema Track, the movie of focus will be Whiplash (2014).
Shattered Outlook; Where to Go from There?
Age Group: 18+
“When is a belief inherited, and when is it earned?”
Sometimes a single event can shatter a worldview overnight. This month, we ask what happens after such drastic events. Do you rebuild the same belief system outlook on life, construct a new one, or learn to live with current circumstances? This month, Manchester by the Sea (2016), will be the main focus.
